Gottfried Leibniz

Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz....

I'm  sure some of the person  who studied computer and mathematics heard his name before. Yes, he was the maker of the Leibniz wheel which is a cylinder with a set of teeths and is used in calculating engine of a class of mechanical calculators.

Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz was the son of Friedrich Leibniz, a professor of moral philosophy at Leipzig(now Germany)

He was considered the "Last Universal Genius".

He was self taught in Math, but also developed Calculus independently from Newton. Although he published his results slightly after Newton's published book, Still his notations were by far superior (including the integral sign and derived notations) and are still use today.

He made a formula for determinant:

        In Algebra, the Leibniz formula expresses the determinant of a square metric.

A = (a_{ij})_{i,j = 1, \dots, n}
In terms of permutations of the metric elements:

 Named in honor of Leibniz, The formula became:

\det(A) = \sum_{\sigma \in S_n} \sgn(\sigma) \prod_{i = 1}^n a_{\sigma(i), i}
